XVI. Tower

Upheaval, destruction, revelation, breakthrough

"I know that what crumbles is clearing space

for what is real and lasting."

The Tower is a card that holds the force of a storm: sudden, undeniable and impossible to ignore. But at its heart, this card is not about upheaval and destruction for its own sake. It is about breaking through illusion, clearing away what was never built to last anyway.

A ruin surrounded by lightning bolts, the rain is pouring. Not the most soothing image to look at. What once might have been a proud building is now only fragments of itself. But it is still there...

The ruin shows that the collapse has already happened. And though it was sudden or painful, the collapse brings clarity. What remains is not comfortable, but it is real. The strongest stones stay in place, providing the foundation for something truer to rise. The Tower tells us that what is false or unstable eventually falls, and sometimes only a raging storm has the power to show us.

The thunderstorm in this card captures the emotional side of the Tower. Upheaval often feels chaotic, frightening, and unfair. Yet storms do not come only to destroy; they also clear the air and refresh the ground. Anyone who has stepped outside after a storm knows the fresh, earthy smell that lingers in the air. A sign that the atmosphere has shifted, that something has been washed clean. After the lightning and rain, the landscape is different, but it is also open, renewed and ready for rebuilding.

Both the ruin and the thunderstorm show that this card is not about punishment but about liberation. The ruin is no longer a fortress but an open space, and while there is vulnerability in that openness, there is also possibility. The Tower invites us to accept the feelings that come with upheaval. Fear, grief, shock, even anger are all natural responses to loss and change. Yet it also asks us to look beyond the storm. Once the dust settles and the sky clears, there is room to rebuild.

A Tower experience can be caused by external events beyond your control: a breakup, a job loss, a betrayal. Other times, it can come from within like a sudden shift in consciousness, a realization that will change everything in a situation. In the end, the process is the same: when something shaky falls apart, the truth will take its place.

With this card on the table, trust that what is falling is meant to fall. Let the storm do its work. Accept that what crumbles is making room for something stronger and more lasting. You can always rebuild what has collapsed and this time, there will be solid ground.

Reflections

  • What in your life has been built on shaky grounds? What open space would be created when it crumbles?

  • What 'collapse' in my past led to unexpected freedom or growth?

  • How do I usually deal with sudden chaos? What has that taught me already?
