XX. Judgement
Awakening, reckoning, clarity, rebirth
“I listen to my higher calling
and rise to my highest potential.”
Coming just before the World card in the Major Arcana, it acts like a moment of clarity that allows us to see where we have been, what we have learned and how we can move forward.
The butterfly captures the essence of this card: transformation. Once a caterpillar bound to the ground, it entered the stillness of the chrysalis (cfr. Hanged One) before emerging with wings. Those wings look delicate, but they are strong enough to carry it far beyond the limits of its former life. Judgement is this moment of emergence, the realization that you are no longer who you once were and that a new way of 'being' is waiting for you.
The sun's beams, connect the landscape to the butterfly. Judgement often arrives in just this way: as a flash of awareness, a moment of truth that shows you what needs to be released. Its clarity can be sharp, but it is always liberating.
Behind the butterfly, the mountains are steady and immovable. These are the challenges that are part of your story. The butterfly floating above them shows that, although they are there, you are not defined by them. Judgement is not about erasing the past; it’s about integrating it, carrying its wisdom without letting it weigh you down.
Judgement invites reflection on your past. Not to dwell in blame, but to acknowledge your choices and consequences with honesty. It is both a call to accountability and at the same time an invitation to forgiveness. Only by facing your story, can you enjoy the freedom to start writing a new one.
This card speaks of a greater purpose as well. The butterfly which is a symbol of life and transformation, is moving towards the light, which is its Judgement. To resist the change is to stay in the cocoon; to embrace the change is to find out that you have wings. Note that this change goes deeper than just the individual. Forgiving means stopping the cycle. Being real means making a place for others to be the same.
So when Judgement appears, you are the butterfly and the mountains below are your challenges. They are real, but they no longer keep you bound. Your wings are the proof that change is not only a possibility, but already a reality.

Reflections
- What part of my life feels like it’s asking for rebirth or renewal right now?
- What past choices do I need to forgive myself for in order to move forward?
- What lessons or experiences from my past are ready to guide me into my next chapter?
